How to read this chronology
Each entry records the position, organisation, location and period as they appear in the official record. The "functions" line describes the institutional role of the post; it does not attribute individual achievements that the sources do not document. Significance notes place the post in the arc of the career.
Across fifty-two years the pattern is clear: long periods at headquarters in coordinating roles, alternating with postings to Washington, Montevideo, Mexico City, Paris, Buenos Aires, New York and Zagreb.

The career ladder
Promotions
The Brazilian Foreign Service has six career ranks. Vieira reached the highest — Minister First Class, the rank from which ambassadors are normally drawn — in 1999, twenty-five years after entering the service.
